Uncle Bob

We are heading to Ohio tomorrow for Uncle Bob's funeral. Such a sad event. He was a loved member of the family. The only good news is that we'll be able to see some cousins who we haven't seen for years.

Hiking in New Hampshire

This weekend, we took a mini-vacation to New Hampshire to run a race and hike in the White Mountains. The race went great - I ran the 12K and Brad snapped pictures of our team (pics to come). Then, we piled into Bruce's car and hit the road to the White Mountains. Once we arrived at our darling little inn, we threw on our hiking boots, did a short hike, hit up a local brewery for some delicious beer, had tapas and wine outside for dinner, and played a vicious game of The New Yorker. By 11 pm, we were wiped out.

The next morning, Bruce, Christy and I hit the trails for a leisurely run and then picked up Brad to start our day hike. We climbed something like 3000 feet (I'll have more specifics once I talk to Brad) over the course of 7 hours... the vistas were stunning, footing was fantastic, and company was awesome. We finished our descent at a waterfall where we waded for a while before heading out for a beer in town.

Brad and I arrived home last night tired, well fed, and bug bit. It was totally worth it.

I'll post pictures when I have more time. I'll also post some from last weekend's graduation when most of the family was in town...

Boston University to honor William Coleman

One of the reasons why I chose BU initially, and why I've loved it all this time, is its dedication to equality. What better new story to evidence my position than this one about William Coleman:

This man has been involved in major reform throughout the past century. The discipline most dear to my heart, education, was incredibly impacted by his work when he served as a legal strategist for the plaintiffs in the 1954 Supreme Court case declaring racial separation in schools unconstitutional.

Not only that, his son, Dr. Hardin Coleman, is my boss at BU and was on my dissertation committee. This, everyone, is a family who walks the walk...

Ode to Arrested Development

What a brilliant show. Brad and I have started round 2 of watching all the episodes in order. Even the second time around, it is still novel. Love it.

In other, perhaps more interesting news, we've been making some changes over here in Beantown over the past 2 months.

The highlights:

1. Brad got a new bike. His new favorite thing to do is go bike riding with his friends (psychoanalyze that, Freud).
2. We repainted our condo. Same colors, just fresher.
3. Laura Hayden became Dr. Laura Hayden.
4. Dr. Laura Hayden accepted a position as Professor Laura Hayden of School Counseling at University of Massachusetts - Boston.
5. We spent a weekend in San Francisco visiting Sloan and Drew. Then Sloan spent a weekend in Boston. 2 weekends of Sloan! Last time we saw her was last year at the Boston marathon and, before that, for that week in Hawaii. So, we don't see her much. She definitely makes the highlight list.

Other than that, we're doing the usual... nights out with friends, trying out new delicious restaurants, singing karaoke at random city spots, etc...
